It snowed! What a beautiful scene. That’s the good news.

The bad news is that along with the snow came very high winds. At the top of the mountain it was about five degrees below zero and the winds were so high it almost stopped me in my tracks. The worst part was the snow coming down so hard, visibility was almost zero. Hard to see the slopes in a white out.

We spent most of the day at the bottom of the mountain working on our technique. Lynn did a repeat at the Spa. We’re all packed and ready to head home.

Great Trip…

Day two was pretty good too. Most of the runs are open but icy. We rode for about six hours and then met Lynn at the Spa for some R&R.

Great day at Snowbird today; all sun!

Lynn spent the day at the spa. Nathan and I tore up the slopes. See below for some great pictures.

Here’s a video of Nathan (white pants, black coat) and Bob (tan pants, blue coat).

It was an incredible day to say the least. Due to the major snowfall during the night, we were not allowed to leave the building, the canyon road was closed and ski patrol was firing cannons at the snowpack to force avalanches so they can open the road.

At about 10:00, they allowed us to leave the building and the first lifts started to open. We hit our first runs just before 11:00. It was incredible. There was at least two feet of fresh powder on the slopes. It was the best skiing I’ve ever seen. It felt like we were floating on the boards and falling was like hitting a bed. We actually found it very easy to snowboard.

After stopping for a quick lunch, we grabbed the cameras and heading out again. Here are two videos we captured. It was still snowing VERY hard and much of the snow had been cut up by this time but you’ll get the idea. These videos seem to mask the speed. As I look at these, I think we’re moving very slow. On the slope, it feels like I’m flying.

Here’s Nathan going down a small part blue run:

And Bob doing his best impression of Sean White:

Our average run time was 30 minutes from chairlift, up the the mountain and back down again. We didn’t take the Tram but that’s our plan today. We’ve only explored about 50% of the mountain. Much to ski tomorrow.

Nathan and I arrived in Salt Lake City, right on time. It was raining and 40 degrees at the airport. We quickly boarded the transportation van to the mountain. As we climbed the mountain the rain changed to snow. Very Cool.

After checking in to our room, we immediately changed into our ski gear. I was seriously (Nathan slightly) impacted by Acute Mountain Syndrome (AMS). This means shortness of breath, rapid heart rate and nausea at high altitudes. We read that drinking lots of water and eating carbs would help and they were right.

The mountain is amazing. Green runs here are like blue runs at home. Nathan called it ‘Epic’. Snowbird got over a 20″ of snow yesterday with more predicted today. The only rough part was the wind. It was howling all day and night. It made skiing almost impossible at times due to zero visibility.

In the morning the canyon road was closed and as we type, ski patrol is shooting cannons to proactively cause avalanches in the back country (we don’t ski there). It’s so loud the windows shake. It’s snowing hard and we expect another great day of powder.
