Paul hosted yet another GREAT guys ski trip. This year there were eight of us (Paul, Kerry, Brandon, Andrew, Matthew, Nathan and Jorden). The weather cooporated completely. It was sunny the first day and then it started snowing, snowing and snowing more.

Day one was Breckenridge – It was a beautiful day. We skied most of the day with sunny skies. The crowds were minimal so we covered a lot of ground. At lunch, we got a great spot at the Robbie’s Bar right on the mountain. The highlight may have been riding the “Imperial Express”. It’s the highest life in North America, topping out at 12,840 feet.

Day two at Vail – The weather called for snow to start dumping at 6:00am and we weren’t disappointed. By the end of the day we had at least 9 inches of new powder. It made for some great tracks. As soon as we arrived, we headed for the back bowls. Visibilty was awful but the skiing was great.

Day three at Beaver Creek – Our last day was another great one. Very short lines and great snow conditions. We found some fresh powder up in McCoy’s park, did some cool tree runs, and lots of trips down Larkspur Express. I love how big the Colorado mountains are.

Nathan registered to race in a half-Ironman. I really didn’t understand what this meant. He invited us to join him in St George, UT. This is where Zion National Park is. So, the whole family joined him for the event.

It was a great trip. We arrived a few days early so we could explore the area. It’s all desert (warm, sunny, and dry) with some really beautiful mountains. Nathan, Hannah, Lynn and I troured Zion Park on foot. It was a great day of hiking.

The next day we drove the Ironman bike course and it took us almost as much time it would for the athletes. Matthew arrived on Friday and he joined me and Lynn on an electric bikeride through Zion. That was really special too. We did the Narrows hike and then Matthew and I climbed Scout’s Landing. That was a VERY hard climb.

The race itself was impressive. We were up and at the swim course before sunrise. The pro’s started at sun-up. It took Nathan an hour to start after the pro start. He finished the whole race in under seven hours. He averages 10 minute miles on the run. You can see his results on the Ironman Website Results Page.

The winners were hard to believe. Average 28mph for the bike and 5:27 for the run. Insane!!

Guys Weekend 2020 https://www.leroynet.com/2020/03/17/guys-weekend-2020/ Tue, 17 Mar 2020 14:51:32 +0000 https://www.leroynet.com/?p=4085 Its the year of the cornonavirus.  There was much debate between me and Nathan about whether we should go or not. In the end we decided to go.

It was a small crew, just Andrew, Kerry, Nathan and me.  Paul had to leave for a business trip in California. Having four makes the lift lines easier.  All being of similar skills makes the riding fast and fun too.

The weather was great both days.

  • Vail – We had wet snow most of the day and that made visibility hard but the snow was good.  The lines were short with very few people there.   16  runs, 24.4 miles. 22,000 vertical feet. Top speed 36mph
  • Breckenridge – It was a beautiful day.  The overnight snow of 3″ made for light power on the runs.  14 runs, 18.3 miles, 17,000 vertical feet.  Top speed 41.3 mph.

Due to the coronavirus, the resorts all closed the day we planned to go home.  Good timing.

Nathans senior prop was this weekend. The kids looked great. All the families came to out house for pictures. The kids then went to Maggiano’s for dinner. We had a limo pick them up from dinner and drive them to and from the dance.

Lynn and I had hosted David and Lisa Allison along with Shelly Reddy for dinner. We had a great time too.

Nathan and I went snowboarding on Saturday. Afterward, I made this video:

Matthew and Nathan started laughing about my arms during the jumps (which were terrifying!) and this video came out of it.

I hope you laugh as much as we did.

Update:

This was absolutely terrifying for a guy over 50.

Nathan said “Dad, the faster you go, the smoother it gets.” That wasn’t very comforting. My heart was pounding out of my chest after the first jump.

The “BIG” jump was crazy. I did the “medium-sized” jump. The ramp was nearly five feet tall. The landing zone was about 20 feet downhill. He was right; going faster was better. But it felt like I was in the air forever! After about six times, it got much easier but my arms wouldn’t stop circling. 🙂

Hey, it keeps me young, right?

Nathan resigned from the lacrosse team due to the sport’s overwhelming demands on his time. He felt it was more important to focus on his studies and music with a bit of fun rather than put everything into one activity year round; and lets not talk about the coaches. It’s hard to argue with a guy who has his priorities straight and well defined.

So, Nathan made the varsity volleyball team on his first try. The team isn’t awesome but they are a solid team and a good group of young men. They are all having lots of fun. So, here’s our first pictures from the 2014 volleyball season.

Hopefully, this is a be a frequent snowboard session year. With that expectation, here’s my log of the days we (me, Nathan and Matthew) went skiing.

Date Duration Notes
11/28/2013 4 hrs

It was the first day of the 2013 season for Perfect North Slopes. The line to get our season passes took an hour. The snow was great, the sky was perfect and the lines are tolerable. Matthew and Jorden did some tubing and then Grandpa took Jorden for food inside while Matthew skied.

12/7/2013 4 hrs

Its a POW Day at Perfect North. After four or five inches of fresh overnight, we arrived very early. The snow was perfect all day. We expected a huge crowd but there were fewer people than we could have imagined. Great day!

12/9/2013 3 hrs

Nathan I headed out right after school/work today. It was cloudy and cool (31). The slope conditions were good but icy in some places. We found the Stokely’s and rode with them for a while. Check out the video.

12/23/2013 6 hrs

Our first day in Colorado. We headed to Vail Resorts. It was about an hour drive from Mary’s mountain house. The weather report said no snow was expected but the roads were very snowy. We arrived to discover nine inches of fresh powder. This mountain is SO BIG, we only experienced a small part of it.

12/26/2013 5 hrs

Yay!! More skiers today. Lauren and Paul joined us for some riding. We went to Beavercreek today. Conditions were very good with minimal crowds. We started out easy for Paul and then quickly jumped to the black-diamond runs…oops! Lauren is a great boarder; she makes it look so easy.

2013-12-26 10.34.43

12/27/2013 7 hrs

Today we went to Arapaho Basin Ski resort. We got out early and stayed until the lifts closed. It’s a small but very technically challenging slope. The views from the top are amazing. The slopes are very close to the rocky cliff mountains. We did a double-black diamond that was crazy steep.

2013-12-27 11.02.09

1/1/2014 3 hrs

Matthew and Kyle joined us for a quit trip to the slopes. We thought it would be crazy busy but it was less crowded than we expected. The conditions were very good. The only down side was our limited time (there was a football game to get seen).

2014-01-01 16.42.07

1/15/2014 3 hrs

Nathan and I had a good day at the slopes today. The snow was quick and the lifts were empty. I spent most of my time on the beginner terrain park. Later we moved up to the regular terrain park and I spent lots of time working on my jumps.

1/29/2014 3 hrs

Beautiful day on the slopes. Lots of sun, low temps, no crowds. Rode lots of switch (backwards) today. It’s harder than I thought it would be.

2/15/2014 3 hrs

It snowed last night and we arrived bright and early today. It was cold but the slopes were in great condition. The only bad part was that it’s was Saturday, sunny, and it just snowed. Perfect conditions for a VERY large crowd. We only stay until noon and the parking lot was completely full; all the way to the barn. And the the line of cars to get in stretched out to route 1.

2/19/2014 3 hrs

Warm day on the slopes. Lots of sun, temps in the high 40’s, no crowds. The snow was very slow. We spent a good part of the day in the terrain park.
