The weather on Day 3 was just a nice as every other day. There is no sun in this country and the temperature is always in the mid 50’s. And, it’s always right on the cusp of raining.
Today, we went to see Saint Paul’s Cathedral. It was built in the late 1600’s. The inside is beautiful. We are making an edit to the post some of you may have read before you went to bed last night because it said that Lynn and Dad tried to climb to the top of the Dome but didn’t quite make it, but we did make it to the level right below the Dome! That is what we get when all of us are sharing our stories–Bob was in a meeting when Lynn, Gladys and Ray visited the Cathedral–he joined us after his meeting–no more work–he is officially on vacation! Anyway, Lynn and Dad DID climb to the Whispering Gallery which was 256 steps up a spiral staircase. As you get closer to the top, the spiral staircase got more narrow–not a good thing if you are claustrophobic! But, the hike to the top was worth it–the views down into the cathedral were incredible! Lynn is afraid of heights so stayed glued to the wall, took in the views down into the Cathedral, then climbed back down. Ray went up further–another 126 steps up, up, up to the balcony that took you outside of the church just below the dome! He said that the views of London were incredible up there! It was a beautiful day, and just for an hour or two the sun was out–not bright, but it came out. Ray said that the stairs to the outside balcony were even more narrow! Not many go that far, and of course, Ray did! There was one more level up–another 111 steps into the Dome, but Ray came back down and didn’t go up that one more level. (which Bob spoke of–that we did not make it up to the Dome). Maybe next time! Only had 111 more steps for Ray!
Later we visited the Tower of London which was originally built in the 1100’s. This is an imposing castle type structure with a long history of torture and fortune. Today it holds England’s crown jewels. After a nice tour, we took the London Underground back to the hotel. Everyone agreed, that was an experience.
Dinner was at Sophia’s in Covent Gardens where many of the major shows are performed. The food was great but the noise level was off the charts loud.
