Hocking Hills

We went to Hocking Hills state park this past weekend.  It was only a two hour drive.  We made it a day trip and took a picnic.  As soon as we arrived, we took off into the Old Man’s Cave gorge.  The 50 foot vertical drop climb down was easy.  Getting back to the top was another story.  If you’re afraid of heights, this place will certainly test your nerve.

The gorge was spectacular.  It was created by a river that eroded the sandstone from beneath the hard surface rock.  It was very hot and dry on our trip so the river was very low.  Indians and early Americans used the overhangs as shelter.  The DNR did a great job of dressing it up.

After lunch, we decided we should hike the three miles to Cedars Falls.  On a normal trail, this should have taken about an hour.  But when climbing over huge rocks, under fallen trees and around the river, it took us over two hours.  Whoops!  Fortunately, they had an “upper gorge” trail that we took back in under 90 minutes.
